Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center to Hold Open Auditions for the Long Island premiere of Joe Landry’s Meet Me in St. Louis: A Live Radio Play

Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will hold open auditions for the Long Island premiere of Joe Landry’s Meet Me in St. Louis: A Live Radio Play on Tuesday, October 2nd and Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:00 PM in Southampton Cultural Center’s Veterans Hall.

Auditions begin promptly at these times. Late arrivals will be seen at the discretion of the directors. Vocal and dance audition required. Readings from the script will also occur. Sides will be provided.

Michael Disher directs. Amanda Jones musically directs. Alyssa Kelly choreographs.

Performances will begin on November 23rd, 2018 and run through December 9th, 2018.

Landry’s radio play is adapted from the book by Hugh Wheeler.

“I am thrilled to be continuing this holiday tradition of presenting Joe’s timeless and humbling nostalgic whispers of gentler times,” said Disher. “Featuring our greatest technology – imagination, Joe effortlessly transports us through sounds and spoken word. And in this case, with a familiar score, to boot.”

Based on The Kensington Stories by Sally Benson and the MGM motion picture Meet Me In St. Louis, starring Judy Garland, Meet Me In St. Louis: A Live Radio Play features songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine, including the classics “The Boy Next Door,” “Skip To My Lou,” “The Trolley Song,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.”

Casting is flexible. Actors must cover several roles, so vocal dexterity is required. The available roles to be covered are:

  • MR. ALONZO SMITH, fortyish, father and lawyer
  • GRANDPA PROPHATER, Mrs. Smith’s father, a Civil War veteran
  • MOTORMAN, trolley car driver
  • CLINTON BADGER, an awkward, bumbling young man

  • LON SMITH, good-looking nineteen-year-old Princeton freshman
  • WARREN SHEFFIELD, Rose’s suitor, an eligible twenty year old man from a rich family
  • PEEWEE DRUMMOND, an awkward, bumbling young man
  • ROSE SMITH, beautiful and chic daughter; about eighteen

Last year I wrote to you about you – your value, your attendance, your support and your generosity. None of which was taken for granted, for with you, Center Stage presented its 10th and most successful season to date.

Together, we did it. Three simple words that collectively embraced actors, designers, ushers, volunteers, painters, costumers, caterers, audience members, supporters and donors. Together, we assembled quite a formidable group. WE are a vocal and visual community. WE are fundamental to the artistic landscape here. WE make a better community, because this is our community. WE live here. And WE are stronger for it.

At Southampton Cultural Center (an active 501c3), Center Stage is committed to presenting an exciting and eclectic array of beloved classics, contemporary voices, timeless musicals, intriguing new works and premieres in the Levitas Center for the Arts. Under the direction of Michael Disher and Joan Bennett Lyons, Center Stage is an integral part of Southampton Village’s new Arts District.

This requires financial support. One hundred percent of your generous and tax-deductible donation will support Center Stage’s upcoming season. Your donation allows us to uphold our standard of excellence. Won’t you join us in our continued commitment to theatre in and by our community?
