East End Jazz and Southampton Cultural Center Present “East Meets West Jam Session”
East End Jazz, in collaboration with the Southampton Cultural Center, is thrilled to announce a new monthly jazz jam session. The “East Meets West Jam Session” will bring the community together through the shared love of music, and it’s free for everyone to attend. The series kicks off on Sunday, October 5, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and will be held on the first Sunday of every month until the end of the year.
The jazz jam session session will feature a special 30-minute performance by the trio of Peter Watrous, a former New York Times jazz critic and curator of the music series at the Arts Center at Duck Creek.
The jam session will be hosted by renowned bassist/composer and East End Jazz director Iris Ornig. Ornig, who moved to the area during the pandemic. Her goal for this new series is to create a welcoming and encouraging environment for everyone.
“I’ve lived out East since the pandemic, but I still don’t know all the musicians, or only know them by name. Let’s make it happen to know each other,” Ornig says: Her vision is to create a welcoming and encouraging environment for everyone. “When I first came to New York, I went to a lot of jam sessions and sometimes I got turned down or had to deal with leaders who had a smirk on their face because I was a girl. I either proved them wrong or completely failed, and that’s when I decided that whenever I hosted a jam session, everyone deserves a chance to play music and show their soul and ability. I won’t be a judge; I just want to have fun and bring the community together.”
The event is open to everyone—musicians of all skill levels, music lovers, jazz enthusiasts, and families and friends. All instruments and vocalists are welcome to participate.
